Alan Lee, functional medicine and functional neurology clinician

Why this clinic exists

Investigated, not just managed

Alan's starting point is that most digestive complaints are managed rather than investigated. His practice is built around understanding the whole case before recommending anything.

Alongside the Gut Wellness Clinic, Alan practises osteopathy in Llandudno and Menai Bridge. He works alongside your GP and any specialists involved in your care.

Why root cause matters

Two different questions

Mainstream medicine asks what the condition is and which treatment controls it. Functional medicine asks why the body has stopped working properly and what will restore it. Most people with ongoing gut symptoms have only ever been asked the first question.

Mainstream approach

What is it, and what controls it?

  • Designed for diagnosing disease and handling emergencies
  • Short appointments focused on the main symptom
  • Standard tests that rule disease in or out, where "normal" can mean not ill enough to treat
  • Gut, hormones and mood handled by separate services
  • Treatment mainly controls symptoms, often long term with medication

Functional medicine approach

Why has it happened, and what restores it?

  • Designed for people who feel unwell but get "normal" test results
  • Long consultations covering diet, stress, sleep, medication, infections and life events
  • Specialist testing that measures how well systems are working
  • The body treated as one connected system: gut, hormones, blood sugar, immune system and brain
  • Treatment corrects the underlying drivers through nutrition, lifestyle and targeted supplements

How it works in practice

What a root-cause analysis looks like

Bloating, for example, may come from low stomach acid, which in turn is linked to chronic stress, poor sleep and blood sugar swings. Treat only the bloating and it comes back.

  1. Map the pattern

The Gut Wellness Profile and a detailed case history.

  2. Measure, don't guess

Targeted lab testing, chosen for a reason.

  3. Correct the drivers

A personalised plan, tackled in the right order.

  4. Track the change

    Follow-up consultations and retesting.

This approach works alongside GP and specialist care. Please don't stop or change prescribed medication without speaking to your prescriber.
